Can You Change The Colour Of Your UPVC Windows

“Can you change the colour of your UPVC windows?” is one of the most common questions I get asked. Particularly as the current trend is leaning away from white and brown UPVC windows and doors and moving to alternative colours like black and grey.

It is possible to use some of the primers and top coats currently on the market but there are now more specialist coatings available designed specifically to coat UPVC.

I decided to put it to the test by painting my own UPVC windows at home. We had changed the front door to a black composite door when we bought the house 5 years ago and I thought it made sense to paint the existing white UPVC windows black to match.

The paint is available in practically any colour and in gloss, satin, matt, metallic and pearlescent finishes. I ordered the black satin paint together with specialist cleaners and set about the transformation on a Saturday morning.

My first task was to remove all the existing silicone from around the windows as the paint will not adhere to it. It will adhere to the rubber weather strips/seals so they didn’t pose any issues.

I then cleaned down all the plastic and the surrounding stonework removing visible dust, dirt, cobwebs etc. I then lightly abraded the plastic to provide a good key for the paint.

Using the specialist cleaning solution all the surfaces were wiped over to remove all traces of contamination.

To get the best possible finish I wanted to spray the paint on to the UPVC and so the next step was to mask off the glass, stonework, sides and back of the opening windows and the also the openings into the rooms.

To check that all contaminants had been removed from the UPVC I sprayed a light dust coat. After checking that no adverse reactions were happening I then sprayed a medium coat.

After allowing approximately 10 minutes for this coat to ‘flash off’ I then applied a second medium coat. The paint dries very quickly and I was able to remove the masking paper and tape after just 5 minutes.

Cleaning the glass down and re-sealing with black silicone completed the transformation.

The adhesion and finish of the windows is outstanding and I have had many positive comments from neighbours and passers-by.

Painting your existing UPVC windows, doors and conservatories offers a highly cost effective alternative to total replacement and is carried out with minimum disruption to your home and daily routine. The paint will not peel, flake or crack.

I am now offering this as an additional UPVC Window And Door Painting Service throughout Rossendale and Lancashire. To arrange for a FREE quotation please contact Mark.
